Hill was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Dixie (Bibb) Graves.  Hill would be re-elected by the Alabama voters five times.  Senator Hill elected not to seek a fifth term and he retired from the Senate in January 1969 after a Congressional tenure that spanned 45 years.  He retired to his home in Montgomery.
