A new read-and-publish agreement between UAB Libraries and journal publisher Emerald Publishing will enable UAB authors to have their article processing fees (APCs) waived when publishing in one of their more than 300 gold and hybrid premier journals — meaning a savings of around $1,600 per author.
The agreement with Emerald Publishing is the fourth new agreement this year; UAB Libraries added two additional agreements with Mary Ann Liebert Inc. and The Company of Biologists in early 2025 and with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press in June. These and previously established read-and-publish agreements with Wiley, Springer Nature, Cambridge Publishing, Royal Society of Chemistry, and others have saved UAB authors more than $1.9 million in costs associated with open access publishing since 2021.
“We’re excited to provide even more opportunities for UAB authors to make their research and scholarship available at no cost to anyone who wants to access it,” said Jeff Graveline, J.D., associate dean for Research and Scholarly Communication and director of the Office of Scholarly Communication in UAB Libraries. “The new agreement with Emerald is another great example of UAB Libraries’ commitment to promoting open access publishing at UAB.”
To qualify, authors must be either the first or corresponding author and use their uab.edu or uabmc.edu email during the submission and acceptance process. Contact Graveline (jgraveli@uab.edu) in the Office of Scholarly Communication with questions.
