Historical Note Lucius Lamar Terry, Sr., was born in Georgia on February 14, 1889, to John Dallas Terry and Mary Catherine Griffin.  In 1910 he entered the pharmacy program at the University of Alabama's Medical College of Alabama, then located in the port city of Mobile.  Terry then completed medical school and graduated in 1916 from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine.  In May 1917 Dr. Terry was commissioned as a medical officer in the US Army.  He was sent to Camp Greenleaf in Georgia for a six week medical training course and was eventually assigned to the 31st Infantry Division, better known as the "Dixie Division," and was attached to Field Hospital No. 124.  Dr. Terry and his Division were sent to France where he served as a field surgeon at the camps on the Marne River and in Verdun.  He returned to the US in 1919 and opened a private medical practice in the town of Dora in Walker County, Alabama.  He also served as a contract physician for the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Co., the Frisco Railroad Co., the Pratt Fuel Coal Co., the Alabama Power Co., and the Dixie Construction Co.  Dr. Terry later relocated to Sylacauga in Talladega County and remained there until his death in 1972.  Dr. Terry was married in Birmingham in 1918 to Betsy Gilder, and they were parents of three sons.
